2014 Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration in Coral Springs

The City of Coral Springs will hold its 24th Annual Martin Luther King Jr. celebration on January 17 with the theme “Living the Dream through Service”. This year’s keynote speaker is the acclaimed author and journalist Wil Haygood. Haygood’s front-page story for the Post in 2008 about longtime White House butler, Eugene Allen, is the inspiration for “The Butler,” a big-screen movie directed by Oscar-nominated director Lee Daniels which was recently released.

Schedule of Events:

January 17, 11:30 a.m. – A business luncheon featuring Wil Haygood at the Coral Springs Marriott at Heron Bay, located at 11775 Heron Bay Boulevard. Tickets available at $40 per person.

January 17, 7 p.m. – Community Celebration at the Center for the Arts, 2855 Coral Springs Drive. The evening celebration will feature music, song, dance and drama, highlighted by a keynote address by Mr. Wil Haygood. Student winners of the Art & Literary Exhibits will be presented with awards on stage at this event. Tickets are $5 for adults and $1 for children 17 and under for those who would like to join this uplifting evening.

A VIP reception will follow the Community Celebration at the Center for the Arts. This is an excellent opportunity to meet and mingle with Mr. Haygood, and enjoy some good fellowship. Reception tickets are $20.

January 20, 9 a.m. – Diversity/Leadership Workshop. This is for High school and middle school students who wants to learn why this is “A Day on, not a Day Off”. There is no charge for this Workshop but pre-registration is required. Students will have the chance to listen to an inspirational speaker and develop their skills on diversity and leadership and at the same time enjoy a morning of interactive activities. The workshop will be held at the Coral Springs Gymnasium.
