Downtown in December

Snow may not be part of the South Florida holiday experience, but we still know how to celebrate the holiday season! Bring your entire family to the City’s Downtown in December on Saturday, December 12. The fun begins at 5 p.m. at the ArtWalk and will include cookies, hot cocoa and other fun winter surprises. The event is free but there will be food and refreshments available for purchase. There will be a giant snowglobe and ice skating rink, that will put you in the holiday spirit! The event will feature an outdoor showing of Dr. Seuss’ How the Grinch Stole Christmas and other short holiday films on a huge movie screen. The featured presentations will begin at 6:30 p.m., but come early to secure your spot and enjoy the holiday atmosphere.

Be prepared for a chance of snow! Blankets and lawn chairs are welcome in the movie area. Please refrain from bringing pets or alcoholic beverages. For more details, please call 954-344-1111 or visit CoralSprings.org/events. The ArtWalk is located at 9405 NW 31st Court. Downtown Coral Springs is located at 9400 W. Sample Road, just west of University Drive. There will be ample free parking in the Downtown area. Still looking for more ways to get in the holiday spirit? Head out to the Coral Springs Center for the Arts on Sunday for The Nutcracker! This popular holiday spectacle follows the story of a young girl who receives a prince-shaped nutcracker for Christmas. At night when everyone else is sleeping, she creeps through the house to visit her gift, only to discover that he and the other toys have come alive and are battling an army of mice. Brought to life by gorgeous costumes and breathtaking choreography, this fanciful ballet will enchant viewers of all ages! You can catch the show at 2PM on December 13th.

Who says Florida doesn’t know how to do the winter holidays? The most beloved superheroes will be putting aside their differences and “Joining Forces for the Holidays” at the annual Holiday Parade on Wednesday, December 9. This year’s parade will be led by Darth Vader and members of the 501st Legion Everglades Squad in their full Star Wars regalia. This will surely get you in the mood to go see Star Wars Episode VII on December 18th!

The parade along Sample Road will feature decorated floats from Coral Springs Drive to City Hall. Each year, the parade draws thousands of spectators and more than 60 floats, bands and other entries. Awards will be given in both non-profit and business divisions. Rain date is Thursday, December 10. Sponsorships are now available and are a great way to promote your business to thousands of local consumers.

Before the holiday parade, individuals and families are invited to participate in the Coral Springs Holiday Mile running race along Sample Road at 6:15 p.m. The Holiday Mile is a great healthy start to your holiday season! The start location is at the northeast corner of Sample Road and Coral Springs Drive (in front of the CVS).  The event is timed with awards, which is open to runners of all ages and abilities. Participants must pre-register online for $15, and are asked to park at the Center for the Arts. Race day registration is $20.

Please note that Sample Road west of University Drive and east of NW 110th Avenue, and Coral Springs Drive north of NW 29th Street and south of NW 37th Street, will be closed on the night of the parade from 5 p.m. until approximately 10 p.m.

We are already flying through November which means the holiday season is upon us! Thanksgiving is only about two weeks away and December will be here before we know it. Kids away at college start to come home and relatives begin to trickle in from everywhere! The Coral Springs community has tons of events and fun holiday themed activities for the whole family. What better way to kick off the holiday season with some exercise! On November 22, Coral Springs Middle and Country Hills Elementary will team up for a certified, timed, 5K “Race for Education”. Aside from fostering the idea of fitness and community involvement, the schools hope to raise funds in order to buy equipment to enhance their technology departments and allow the schools to continue to provide a high quality education. Family, friends and community members are encouraged to attend. Local business sponsorship’s are needed to make this event a success. Serious runners and casual walkers are welcome.
