BBQ Summer Safety

It’s summertime in South Florida which means schools are out and it’s barbecue time! Having a barbecue is a great way to bring family and friends together at your home. While barbecues are very enjoyable there are some safety tips that can help you have a fun and safe celebration at your home. You don’t want your summer barbecue to be memorable for all the wrong reasons.

  • Always make sure the grill is placed well away from the home. This includes away from deck railings and out from under eaves and overhanging branches. It can be tempting to pull the grill under an overhang especially when we are getting one of those common afternoon rain showers, but resist the urge to do so. It is not only a fire hazard, but grills release carbon monoxide. That gas needs to vent in fresh air or it can build up and be a deadly poison.
  • Keep your grill clean by removing grease or fat buildup from the grills and in trays below the grill. A dirty grill can be a serious fire hazard. Along with this always keep a spray bottle of water handy. This can calm minor flare ups and a little water spray won’t harm your food and spoil those delicious burgers!
  • Always keep a fire extinguisher within a couple steps of your grill, but more importantly know how to use it. A fire extinguisher is useless and even harmful if you do not know how to properly use it. If you are unsure call 911 immediately when a fire starts.
  • Mosquitos love to come around on those humid Florida afternoons. To keep you and your guests from being eaten by these pesky insects it is important to drain all areas where water can be collected before having guests over your home. Also provide mosquito repellent for guests to apply to their skin and clothing. Nobody likes to go home from a barbecue with lots of bites!

These are just a few ways to keep your family and your home safe. The GreatFloridaHomes team hopes everyone is enjoying their summer and gets out there and gets grilling!

It is the entertainment where you can enjoy family and friends and a good old fashion barbecue.

party calendar

*Timing Your Event* – In Florida, with rainy season and hurricane season, you probably won’t be able to plan a month ahead, but certainly check the upcoming weather to save you from just a hope and a prayer that things will be nice.

*Seating for Many* – Plan on more seating than you think you will need, as barbecues tend to attract extra guests. If you don’t have enough chairs for your guest list, add “Bring Your Own Chair” to the invite!

*Planning the Menu* – Keep the menu simple and focus on your main attraction: the food and company! Choose appetizers, side dishes and desserts that can be prepared in advance so you don’t spend all day in the kitchen while your guests are enjoying themselves outside.

*Decorating Your Space* – Give your backyard get-together some festive summer flair! Use cut flowers from your garden as centerpieces, break out the checked tablecloths and be sure to add extra outdoor lighting, to light up the night.

*Entertaining Your Guests *– Challenge your guests to a game of bocce, croquet or horseshoe. Whatever the entertainment, remember, it’s the people that make a party fun!

*Keeping the Bugs Away *– Place citronella candles on tables and stake out your entertaining space with citronella torches to keep mosquitoes away. Keep food covered or promptly remove it from the visiting area to avoid attracting flies and bees.

The PERFECT Party is more about inviting the people you enjoy spending time with, so don’t fuss over the little things that may go wrong. Enjoy the fact you can celebrate life and living together with people you care about. Those are the ones who really do not care if the silverware matches.

Enjoy your summer fun celebrations!
