Autumn Home Maintenance Tips for South Florida

Posted on October 6, 2021 by Great Florida Homes

Living in South Florida comes with a lot of perks and benefits, but that doesn’t mean you can skip Autumn maintenance. Even with the mild weather we get to enjoy in South Florida, it’s important to do some home maintenance before winter.

Here are some of the most important Autumn home maintenance tasks we recommend to everyone in South Florida.

Autumn Home Maintenance Florida

Clean Out Your Gutters

One of the most important kinds of home maintenance you can do is to make sure your gutters have been cleaned. If you live in a house or townhome you’ll probably need to clean them out yourself. Condo owners should contact maintenance to make sure it’s been taken care of.

It’s also important to clean out your gutters anytime your area has been hit by a hurricane or tropical weather. Extra debris and fallen leaves can quickly clog your gutters and may cause home damage over time.

Check Doors And Window Seals

Weather in Florida might be milder than most places, but you still want to keep your A/C and heating in your home. We recommend checking the seals around doors and windows every fall for signs of damage or cracking.

If you aren’t sure whether a crack is less than airtight you can use soapy water to check. Just wet the area around the cracked sealant with water and watch for bubbling or foam.

Check For Roof Damage

Heading into Autumn it’s important to check your roof for signs of wear and tear. It’s especially important to check your roof for damage after hurricanes and other severe weather since one-time events can cause a lot of damage.

Look for loose or discolored shingles, any signs that your shingles have fallen, or cracking. If only one or two shingles are damaged, you can probably replace them yourself. For more extensive damage it’s a good idea to contact a roofing company or contractor.

Re-Treat Any Worn Exterior Surfaces

Waterproofing and paint can wear out faster in South Florida than in other places, so it’s important to check your home at least once a year. We recommend checking in the Autumn since that’s the season the most damage is likely to happen.

Look for faded paint and seals, cracking and chipping, or discoloration. All of those can be signs that the area needs to be resealed or redone entirely.
