Coral Spring’s 23rd Annual Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration

Every year, the City of Coral Springs is hosting the Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration to honor and commemorate the life and works of this dearly loved civil rights leader. And this year the Coral Springs Martin Luther King, Jr. Committee and in partnership with Citibank will hold the 23rd Annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration on January 18, 2013. “Just Dream It! Soar to New Heights” will be this year’s theme.

The celebration will also be extra special with the presence of Joan Higginbotham-Mitchell as the keynote speaker during the Business Luncheon on Friday, January 18, 2013 at 11:30 a.m. at the Church by the Glades located at 400 Lakeview Drive. Tickets are $35 per person.
Joan Higginbotham-Mitchell is one of the three African-American female astronauts ever fly in space to the International Space Station. This Chicago native first started her career as a Payload Electrical Engineer in the Electrical and Telecommunications Systems Division of the Kennedy Space Center (KSC). Shortly after six months, Mitchell became the lead for the Orbiter Experiments (OEX) on OV-102, the Space Shuttle Columbia.

Later in the evening at 7 p.m., a Community Celebration will be held at the Center for the Arts, 2855 Coral Springs Drive. Everyone is invited; Tickets are $5 for adults and $1 for children 17 years and below. Everyone will get to enjoy the music, dance, drama, and keynote address by Joan Higginbotham-Mitchell. Awarding of winners of the Art and Literary Exhibits will also take place during this event.

The guests will have the chance to meet and be associated with the keynote speaker first-hand during the VIP Reception at 9 p.m. following the Community celebration. Tickets will be available at $20 for each person.
The Martin Luther King Celebration will be culminated by a Diversity/Leadership workshop for the high school and middle school students on January 21, 2013 at the Coral Springs Gymnasium from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. The students will have the privilege to get to know more of their elected officials and earn service hours.
