El Nino has just been declared, which means that everyone around the globe needs to be prepared for a slightly different weather year. Here in South Florida, we can expect warmer temperatures, a more active hurricane season, and more precipitation in general.
If you live in South Florida or are planning to move here this year, here’s what you need to know to prep for El Nino in 2023 and beyond.
One of the most important things you can do, since we’re likely to be heading into an active hurricane season is to make a hurricane plan in case you happen to be in the path of one of the storms.
A good hurricane isn’t just when and whether you will evacuate ahead of a storm. You should also have a plan for getting a clean water supply, food that doesn’t require cooking, and what to do if you are isolated by flooding.
If you need medications, especially refrigerated medication, make sure you have a plan for those as well. If you plan on running a generator, make sure you have a couple of days worth of gas at least.
Lastly, make sure you have a plan for keeping any pets safe in your home and making sure their needs are taken care of.
Your home’s weatherproofing, including having stormproof windows and doors and a roof in good condition, is critical for weathering El Nino storms.
If you suspect that you might need some weatherproofing maintenance, now is the time to make your appointments and get the problems dealt with ahead of time. Schedule a roof inspection, and weatherproofing service as soon as possible, or consider doing some things, like renewing sealing strips on doors and windows, yourself.
Even outside of hurricanes, you can expect wetter-than-average weather this year. That means making sure you have good tires on your vehicle is a must.
Make sure to get new tires for any with worn tread, and any summer vehicle maintenance you need ahead of time done now instead of waiting when mechanics and tire shops are going to have long waiting lists.
One of the things that comes with an El Nino year is hotter than average temperature. That means if you haven’t already done it, now is the time to get your home AC system checked and tuned up. That way you can be cool and comfortable at home all season long!
